After an intense period of development, the company is now entering a further phase of consolidation, with the aim of improving efficiency and strengthening profitability and capitalization, thanks to a competitive positioning in key sectors such as steel and industrial waste recovery.

Intermodal and road transport

In 2024, the share of intermodal traffic was mainly concentrated in Germany (47% of volumes), with forecasts of growth in 2025, as well as in Sweden (2% in 2024), which is also expected to expand significantly. Conversely, traffic with the Netherlands (41% of total intermodal volumes) is expected to decline next year. On the road transport front, Italy confirms itself as a stable market (27% of the total), with growth prospects especially in exchanges with Switzerland (currently 7% of volumes) and Austria (20%), while Germany (42%) shows signs of stability or slight contraction, a clear consequence of GDP decline and the slowdown effects in automotive supply chains. Overall, in 2024 MIS transported 77.5% of total volumes (in tonnes) to and from foreign countries, confirming its role as an intermodal and road logistics operator supporting the competitiveness of Italian industrial districts linked to steel and the trading of raw materials, ferrous alloys, and other commodities.

In terms of volumes, excluding the industrial waste business, a slight decrease (2%) in total tonnes transported was recorded, reaching 1,220,000 tonnes in 2024 compared to 1,248,000 tonnes in 2023. This result should be interpreted within the broader context of the main reference sector linked to steel production and the trading of ferrous raw materials and other commodities. This sector recorded a 10% drop in exports, partly due to declining prices even before the impact of international tariffs at the center of recent geopolitical disruptions. The districts of Brescia, Cremona, Udine and Mantua remain the main export areas, albeit with reductions compared to 2023. In this scenario, MIS consolidates its presence along major international road and intermodal corridors, supporting clients in transport and advanced logistics, with the aim of fully leveraging opportunities offered by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and major infrastructure projects.

Distinctive positioning and new developments

MIS stands out for its specialization in the transport of steel materials—from pig iron to steel in various formats (slabs, billets, beams, pipes)—and special industrial waste, both hazardous and non-hazardous. The company also operates in synergy with its subsidiaries to provide terminal services, land and intermodal transport, quay handling, and rail traction across several national hubs (Cremona, Brescia, Venice, Trieste, Jesi), with the aim of continuously seizing new ordinary and extraordinary opportunities.

In 2024, there was significant growth in the industrial waste transport sector, both by road and intermodal modes, linked to major infrastructure sites and specialized logistics for large incineration plants and recycling centers. In this segment, MIS revenue more than quadrupled in 2024 as a result of substantial investments in vehicles and transport capacity made over the past two years. Thanks to the gradual transition from category 5c to 5b and finally to 5a of the National Environmental Managers Register, MIS can now handle unlimited quantities of hazardous industrial waste, moving over 6,500 containers per year in complete safety. ISO 14001 certification has also enabled a 40% reduction in the financial guarantee required by the Ministry of the Environment. This new operational capacity allows the company to tackle increasingly ambitious projects while ensuring high standards of quality and safety. In line with its mission, MIS contributes to a sector increasingly oriented toward circular economy principles. Logistics is a key lever in an economic system where waste becomes a resource through an integrated waste cycle—namely, the set of processes that intercept waste, direct it to proper treatment and recovery, and then transform it into either secondary raw materials to be reintroduced into the economic cycle or renewable energy (thermal or electrical), thus restarting the production cycle of new materials and products.

Innovation and sustainability

MIS’s approach is based on advanced technologies and partnerships with leading suppliers in IT services (CIRCLE Group) and onboard equipment for heavy vehicles, increasingly equipped with innovative safety and assistance systems such as Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ Predictive Powertrain Control, as well as a strong commitment to sustainability, demonstrated by a recent certification achieved in collaboration with Michelin and Rigomma, through which innovative solutions for tire regrooving and retreading have been introduced.

This commitment, certified by DEKRA Italia, has resulted in savings of 82.2 tonnes of CO₂ and 26.4 tonnes of raw materials, equivalent to a saving of 0.33 tonnes of CO₂ per vehicle in the MIS fleet, which consists of 140 heavy vehicles and 190 semi-trailers supported by a 24/7 maintenance service operated by MIS Service, the in-house team dedicated to fleet technical management.

Furthermore, MIS is involved in international research and development programs such as the AutoMoTIF project (https://automotif-project.eu/), which will host over 30 managers in Brescia and Cremona on May 6–7 for a plenary meeting and technical visits to the intermodal terminals of Cremona and Montirone (BS).

Human capital: training and inclusivity

In 2024, MIS employed 172 people (+7.5% compared to 2023), including 122 drivers. Recruitment and continuous training in this area remain under strong pressure due to a shortage of specialized resources and high turnover rates. The overall average age is 41, with an average of 35 in office roles. Significant investments have been made in training, with over 1,330 hours of mandatory courses (safety, machinery operation, etc.) and approximately 1,175 hours of non-mandatory training (languages, leadership, management development).

Female representation in office roles has tripled over the past four years, increasing from 5 to 17 women—56% of a total of 30 employees. The company offers an integrated welfare system (meal vouchers, digital welfare platform) and supports families during key moments such as maternity.

“After five years of strong expansion, our priority is to consolidate our structure, focus on our strengths, and continue raising standards of sustainability and innovation – said Paolo Magli, President of MIS. “In such a complex and dynamic environment, we aim to build strong partnerships, strengthen profitability, and foster an inclusive corporate culture oriented toward personal growth.”

—End—

Rezzato (BS), April 10, 2025 MIS, Magli Intermodal Service confirms for 2024 a turnover of €61 million, in line with the 2023 result (€61.5 million) and up compared to €49.3 million in 2022.
